“I Can’t Believe I Haven’t Read That Yet” #26 (Help Me Choose!)

For this feature, I curate a small list of books that make me think, “I can’t believe I haven’t read that”. Then, you vote on which book I should read next. I hope that I’ll be able to ‘catch up’ on certain books that I ‘should’ have read ages ago and finally be able to discuss those books with my fellow book lovers.

#25’s Result – Of Salt and Shore by Annet Schaap

I finally made it through this book! I’m pretty sure I have checked it out from the library two or three times over the years. Something about the cover kept putting me off, though. Thankfully I have this feature to push me to finally read it 😛 Of Salt and Shore has a lot of elements which I thought, when taken together, would create a story right up my alley. But somehow this one didn’t quite work for me. Too many of those elements were a few notches off what I usually enjoy, and that added up to a general feeling of ambivalence towards the book. Probably my favourite aspect of the story was the relationship between Lampie and her father (and her mother, for that matter).

#26’s Selection

The theme for the next edition of “I Can’t Believe” is intriguing books that have been on my TBR for more years. To choose titles, I sorted my to-read-intriguing shelf by date added, descending, and selected the first four titles that jumped out to me (and are also available from the library).

  • 20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill (horror short story collection) – added 3 Oct 2013
  • The Engagement by Chloe Hooper (contemporary thriller) – added 31 Dec 2013
  • The Prestige by Christopher Priest (historical fantasy) – added 3 Oct 2014
  • Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde (futuristic dystopia) – added 7 Nov 2014
