1. Tom and Hatty in Tom’s Midnight Garden – I recently read this book because I needed a classic for my children’s literature course (it won the Carnegie in 1958). I was pleasantly surprised by the development of Tom and Hatty’s relationships. I cheered the lack of any romance between them.
2. Mo and Meggie in the Inkheart trilogy – Seeing how Mo and Meggie’s father-daughter relationship evolves as their characters grow (and as they develop relationships with other characters) over the course of three books is one of the highlights of the trilogy for me. 
3. Inkling and Ethan’s family in Inkling – An inkblot comes to life and befriends 12 year old Ethan, Ethan’s younger sister, and Ethan’s father. Probably the most unique platonic relationships I’ve ever read about. Read my review of Inkling here. 
4. Frances and Aled in Radio Silence – One of the reasons I loved this book so much was the friendship between Frances and Alex. I would love to see more boy-girl friendships like this in YA. Read my review of Radio Silence here.
