I’m sticking with the original topic for today (TTT throwback). Previous TTT with this topic include #1 Childhood Favourites and #77 Childhood Faves. This turned out to be a bit trickier than I anticipated, as I couldn’t recall the titles of three of my favourite books. (I was close with two of them – I had Picollo and Timothy in mind and ‘Amanda’s scrapbook;). I kept these books but they are at home in Winnipeg! So I gave my mom a call and she helped me out with #3, #4, and #5. 🙂 Titles link to Goodreads. In no particular order:
- Look Out, Patrick! by Paul Geraghty – Mice were my favourite animals as a kid. I liked seeing the different ways in which Patrick obliviously avoids death.
- Pikolo’s Night Voyage by Tibo – I had two Pikolo books Reading them was like entering a dream. I think they were mostly wordless. Pikolo enters a magical world through his closet at night and travels on a wooden train.
- Amelia’s Celebration by Jirina Martin – A young girl sneaks out to her parent’s nighttime party. I loved the illustrations, with each spread featuring a different monochrome palette.
- Amanda’s Book by Kerry Westell and Ruth Ohi – Girl receives scrapbook as a gift, starts cutting out things from the real world to put in it. I love the spread of her running across fluffy peach clouds.
- Sarah Saw a Blue Macaw by Jo Ellen Bogart and Sylvie Daigneault – I used to take this out on book tape all the time. I loved the colourful jungle setting and finding the hidden animals.
- Alistair Underwater by Marilyn Sadler – Alistair builds a submarine and explores the pond in his backyard. Great concept. I liked the clean, bold colours, plus I thought his expressions were funny.
- Dear as Salt by Rafe Martin and Vladyana Krykorka – I discussed some of this book in a post about defining my personal canon. I adored the lush illustrations and the fairy tale narration.
- The Monster at the End of This Book by Jon Stone – My dad used to read this book to me and my sister. What kind doesn’t love the build of anticipation in this story?
- Purple, Green and Yellow by Robert Munsch – My favourite Munsch book because of all the colours and the slightly absurd conclusion.
- The Balloon Tree by Phoebe Gilman – Another delightful princess story, though completely different from Dear as Salt. I liked Leora’s spunk and all the colourful baloons.
- Hide and Sneak by Michael Kusugak and Vladyana Kyrkorka – An Inuit picture book about a little girl who hide and seek with a mischevious creature. I thought the creatur e was cute but mean. I also liked the scenery. It was many years before I realized the illustrator is the same woman who did Dear as Salt! But you can see the resemblance in the wispy colouring.
