My TBR for a Thanksgiving Readathon

Posted 12 October 2019 in to be read /2 Comments

Well, it’s Thanksgiving weekend. And my library holds have been piling up. So! I’ve decided to have an impromptu readathon tomorrow.

Because of my new position at work (oh hey did I mention I have a new position? I’m going to be the children’s librarian at the branch nearest to where I live for at least a few months ^^), my weekends are always Sunday and Monday. This Thanksgiving weekend isn’t particularly special for me, as I don’t have any family here. But I am going to make it special by cozying up on the couch and reading all day. (With a break to vote and prepare my dinner, which will consist in part of a turkey cranberry pie from the Aussie pie shop and a big pot of mashed potatoes.) I am thankful for good books and good food!

Anyway, here’s the list of the books I have lying around my apartment. Nine of the ten books below are library books with varying due dates, so I best enjoy them while I have them. Links to Goodreads.

  1. Valour Road by John Nadler – My mom and I are reading this book (about the three men who lived on the same road in Winnipeg and were awarded the Victoria Cross during WWI) for October’s Family Reads.
  2. From the Ashes: My Story of Being Métis, Homeless, and Finding My Way by Jesse Thistle – Due in six days and there are 83 people waiting for a copy, so I better finish this one soon.
  3. Sweet Bean Paste by Dorian Sukegawa – Japanese fiction. I put this on hold when I was going through a Japanese fiction kick earlier in the summer and now it’s finally here.
  4. The Saturday Night Ghost Club by Craig Davidson – Adult fiction. Set in small town Canada during the 1980s. I get Stranger Things vibes from the cover, but apparently it’s more realistic than supernatural.
  5. Beautiful Darkness by Kerascoët’s and Fabien Vehlmann – A somewhat infamous graphic novel due to its creepy cute nature that’s been on my TBR for awhile.
  6. Scary Stories for Young Foxes by Christian McKay Heidicker – Spooky middle grade that I’d been waiting for since summer. At least it’s the best season for spooky books now.
  7. Splendors and Gloom by Laura Amy Schlitz – I like to have one ebook on hand for easy reading while I’m eating (because I can prop my iPad up and not have to hold open a book :P). Another creepy middle grade.
  8. The Ghost Collector by Allison Mills – Spooky Indigenous (Cree) middle grade fiction! Cool! Just released a few weeks and somehow my library already has a copy available, amazing… (-.- usually I am waiting months, as you may have gathered from my above comments).
  9. Lalani of the Distant Sea by Erin Entrada Kelly – Kelly’s books are kind of hit and miss with me but I’m curious about this one because it’s a fantasy. I just borrowed it today so it’s low priority.
  10. Little Blue Encyclopedia (for Vivian) by Hazel Jane Plante – A friend of a friend wrote this book! I went to the launch here in Vancouver a couple nights ago. It’s not a book with a due date, though, so it has relatively low priority right now. ^^;

I hope to finish two books and dabble in a few more. I am also a few days behind on my daily The History of Middle-Earth readings, so I hope to catch up on that. What are you reading this weekend? Are you celebrating Thanksgiving?

  1. Not vacation here, but my long-time hold of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone came in and I enjoyed it a lot. Congrats on your new position! I had Sundays and Mondays off for a few years and it was kind of a pain when there were always things going on on Saturdays, but having Monday off is cool.

    • Glad to hear you enjoyed a book that you had to wait patiently for! Thank-you for the congrats re: my new position. There’s lots to be done but I’m enjoying it all. It is handy having a weekday off. I find the Thursday evening I have to work a bit more frustrating – I have already missed out on a few things I would have liked to check out.
