Today’s Top Ten Tuesday is Love Freebie. Perfect for me to shoehorn in a theme I’ve wanted to write about for some time now! This post features books that are all sequels to middle grade books I loved (or, you know, rated at least 3.5 stars).
It’s no secret I prefer standalones. Sometimes I feel those are rare finds in middle grade. It can be hard to give a sequel attention with so many other stories waiting to be read. But even I can say there’s no shortage of middle grade books I’ve enjoyed that have spawned sequels, so today, I’m sharing middle grade sequels that I may get around to one day.
- Stars So Sweet by Tara Dairman (All Four Stars #3)
- A Mixture of Mischief by Anna Meriano (Love Sugar Magic #3)
- Book 1 was a 2018 Cybils finalist
- Thisby Thestoop and the Wretched Scrattle by Zac Gorman (Thisby Thestoop #2)
- Book 1 was a 2018 Cybils finalist
- Silver Batal: Race for the Dragon Heartstone by K.D. Halbrook (Silver Batal #2)
- The Jumbie God’s Revenge by Tracey Baptiste (The Jumbies #3)
- Thrive by Kenneth Oppel (The Overthrow #3)
- I enjoyed the first two books in this trilogy. However, I’ve picked up the third one a couple times and found it off to a slow start. But I do want to learn how the story ends!
- The Princess Who Flew with Dragons by Stephanie Burgis (Tales from the Chocolate Heart #3)
- Book 1 was 2017 Cybils winner. Super cute. While chronological, the books essentially stand alone, so I haven’t become invested in a continuous story.
- Dead Voices and Dark Waters by Katherine Arden (Small Spaces #2 and #3)
- Finally read Book 1 in late 2020 and enjoyed how spooky it was.
- The Last Mirror on the Left by Lamar Giles (A Legendary Alston Boys Adventure #2)
- One Year in Coal Harbour by Polly Horvath (Coal Harbour #2)
- An unexpected sequel! I remember my fifth grade teacher reading Book 1 to our class. Nostalgia and desire to read more Canadian middle grade motivate my interest in this sequel.
- Ragweed and Poppy by Avi (Tales from Dimwood Forest #7)
- I haven’t actually read all of the Tales, but as with #9 above, this is a sequel which unexpectedly delighted me. Ragweed is my favourite character in the series (when I was in grade one, I wanted to get a pet mouse and name it Ragweed), so this should be a comfort read.
- The City by Christian M. Heidicker (Scary Stories for Young Foxes #2)
- A sequel to one of my favourite middle grades. I only recently learnt about this book’s existence! I’d say its the book on this list I’m most likely to read this year.
- Lair of the Beast and Voyage on the Eversteel Sea by Adam Jay Epstein (Wily Snare #2 and #3)
- Book 1 was a 2017 Cybils finalist
Have you read any books in these series? What’s a sequel you’d like to tackle someday?
I haven’t read any of these, but I’m a big Stephanie Burgis fan, and I’ve always heard good things about Katherine Arden’s series😁
If you are ever in the mood for middle grade, I would highly recommend both!
I love middle grade books. These look super fun.

I haven’t heard about any of these. They sound interesting. I hope you can read them soon.
Thank-you! It does seem that a lot of these titles didn’t reach a wide audience, which is a bit of a shame.
I love middle grade books, but I haven’t read any of these. The Arden series is one I’ve had my eye on. It looks spooky and fun.
Happy TTT!

Thanks Susan! ‘Spooky and fun’ is an apt descriptor for Arden’s MG series – I’d say it’s wroth checking out 🙂
I still haven’t read on in the Love Sugar Magic series but the first one was a lot of fun
I absolutely adore the Love Sugar Magic series! I’ve only read the first one, but planning on reading the second & third next month, so hopefully we both actually get to it soon!
