Today’s Top Ten Tuesday is Most Anticipated Books Releasing in the First Half of 2024. At the end of December, I had few 2024 releases on my TBR. Then lots of bloggers posted their list of anticipated 2024 reads (ex. Aquavenatus, Every Book a Doorway, A Literary Escape), and my TBR grew. Since I only have 15 books releasing between January and June this year on my TBR, I’m listing them all here.

(I realized after creating this list that I have nearly 100 books on my Goodreads to-read shelf which don’t have a publication date… I realized this because I made the list and then thought, “Isn’t there a new Helen Oyeyemi novel this spring?” So there may be other releases that I’m missing, but I’m not going to worry about that now.)

  • Not Quite a Ghost by Anne Ursu (Jan 16 – middle grade speculative)
    • Look at that cover! A haunted house story from Anne Ursu?? Sign me up!!!
  • The Parliament by Aimee Pokwata (Jan 16 – adult horror)
    • Early reviews seem to be mixed but I have to check out a horror tale set in a library featuring owls …
  • Your Shadow Half Remains by Sunny Moraine (Feb 6 – adult horror)
    • New to me! The summary doesn’t give much away.
  • The Warm Hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden (Feb 16 – adult historical paranormal)
    • If this is another hit from Arden (who has found great success with her middle grade horror and adult historical fantasy), I will be impressed. I’m especially curious about the Halifax aspect.
  • Fathomfolk by Eliza Chan (Feb 27 – adult fantasy)
    • I usually stay away from these sorts of weighty adult fantasies, but the lure of a “semi-submerged city” has caught me.
  • The Butcher of the Forest by Premee Mohamed (Feb 27 – adult fantasy horror)
    • Another slim Tordotcom release
  • Slow Productivity: The Lost Art of Accomplishment Without Burnout by Cal Newport (Mar 5 – non-fiction)
    • I found some practical ideas in Newport’s Digital Minimalism so I’m interested to read what else he has to say. I feel like by March I may be burning myself out if I keep up with this rate of blogging lol so maybe I’ll learn some new strategies…
  • Parasol Against the Axe by Helen Oyeyemi (adult fiction???)
    • I have been a fan of Oyeyemi’s since 2010 and even if I scarcely understand what she’s been writing about for the past few books, I will continue to read anything she puts out.
  • The Woods All Black by Lee Mandelo (Mar 19 – adult historical horror)
    • Wowwee what a surprise another Tordotcom title!
  • The Last Bloodcarver by Vanessa Le (Mar 19 – young adult fantasy)
    • Here again is something I would usually avoid (ie young adult) but perhaps I’ll give it a shot.
  • Sleeping Giants by Rene Denfeld (Mar 26 – adult thriller)
    • If you were blogging in 2014 you might recal Denfeld’s debut The Enchanted. Sleeping Giants is only her fourth releases since then (following a duology), so I’m keen to check it out.
  • A Sweet Sting of Salt by Rose Sutherland (Apr 9 – adult fantasy)
    • Dark queer fairytale retelling of a selkie story? I’m here for it.
  • The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo (Apr 9 – adult historical fantasy)
    • I’ve never read a Bardugo book but this one appeals to me! Might read it for Family Reads with my sister…
  • Earthflown by Frances Wren (Apr 16 – adult SF romance)
    • Seems likely this will be too romance-y for me… but the scifi premise is neat.
  • Flawless Girls by Anna-Marie McLemore (May 28 – young adult thriller)
    • I’m kind of devastated by the blah cover on this but you know I’ll read anything McLemore writes. Unclear whether there will be element of magical realism in this one.

Which 2024 releases are you looking forward to between now and June?
My list is short on middle grade – which 2024 MG releases are on your TBR?

  1. Amazing list, Jenna! I have so many of these on my list too, and I’m especially excited for The Familiar and The Warm Hands of Ghosts. I love the cover of Not Quite a Ghost as well😁

  2. So many good choices! I just started The Parliament last night — I haven’t looked too much at the synopsis, so I don’t know exactly where it’s going, but I like it so far! I’m looking forward the The Warm Hands of Ghosts too. Hope you enjoy all of these!

  3. I’ve got a couple of books in common with you on my list, but you’ve got others I haven’t heard of and now want to read! I love seeing what everyone’s anticipated books are, but now my TBR is also growing too quickly! I hope you enjoy them all!

  4. Thanks for linking my list here! I also thought about putting THE PARLIAMENT in my list, but ultimately went with my gut, meaning I wasn’t sure it was quite the book for me, though the owls part is neat.

  5. I must be really out of the loop because I don’t recognize many of these. Your Shadow Half Remains has one heck of a cover. Let me go add it to my TBR based on this alone. Also Warm Hands. What a list! I hope you enjoy these.

    • A lot of them I only came across in recent weeks! I was able to spend a good deal of blog hopping over the Christmas holidays and looking at folks’ anticipated lists. There seems to be a lot of intriguing horror in store for 2024, so that may be something to look forward to. 🙂
