#27’s Result – Black Sheep by Rachel Harrison
Black Sheep was a perfect choice to coincide with Spookastic Reads at the end of October. I knew it was a story about a young woman returning to her family’s cult community. Beyond that, I’d heard it was best to go in knowing as little as possible. I agree with that advice. If you’ve been spoiled for what the ‘terrifying secret’ is, then you probably won’t find as much entertainment in the build up and reveal of said secret. So I will keep my thoughts vague on this one!
I picked up on some hints ahead of the secret reveal, but hadn’t put all the pieces together. Dealing with the fall out of that reveal for the rest of the book gave me a couple hours of evening entertainment. It’s a dark story with a few violent moments and a lot of family drama, but nothing too heavy. The climax in particular I found unique and creative. A pretty fun and easy read for this time of year!
#28’s Selection
The theme for the next edition of “I Can’t Believe” is 2020 middle grade releases. To choose titles, I sorted my to-read-middle-grade shelf by release date ascending and browsed through the 2020 section. I selected the first four titles that jumped out to me.
- Prairie Lotus by Linda Sue Park (pub’d 3 Mar 2020)
- Any Day With You by Mae Respicio (pub’d 5 May 2020)
- The Total Eclipse of Nestor Lopez by Adrianna Cuevas (pub’d 21 July 2020)
- Eva Evergreen, Semi-Magical Witch by Julie Abe (pub’d 4 Aug 2020)

I’m glad you enjoyed Black Sheep! The reveal caught me completely off guard and made the story even better. I don’t know much about middle grade but The Total Eclipse of Nestor Lopez is jumping out at me, so that’s my pick😁
Thanks Tammy! I didn’t want to say this in my post cos I feel like even hinting at it could give it away, but: I also had no idea that it was going to be a satantic cult so I found that pretty amusing when it was revealed, too. Now I notice the little devil horns on the sheep on the cover, haha.
I vote for Prairie Lotus! I really enjoyed it! I had mixed feelings about Eva Evergreen.
Thanks Krysta! I have read some mixed things about Eva Evergeen but that cover is so gosh darn cute, I still want to give it a try, haha.
The cover drew me in, too! I think I also read the sequel because, well, it still looked cute!
I would enjoy reading your thoughts of Prairie Lotus.
My vote is for Prairie Lotus. I’ve enjoyed other Linda Sue Park books, though I have not read this one.
Thanks Linda! This would be my first read by Linda Sue Park :O
