Today’s Top Ten Tuesday is 2024 Releases I Was Excited to Read but Still Haven’t Gotten To. Many 2024 releases I added to my TBR after they had dropped, so I wasn’t keenly anticipating them. But as I scrolled through my to-read shelf, I did manage to find ten 2024 releases that I should consider prioritizing this year.
- Parasol Against the Axe by Helen Oyeyemi (adult fiction)
- This is also on my 2025 owned TBR. I received it as a birthday gift in 2024. Oyeyemi is one of my favourite authors, though I barely understand her novels these days haha.
- Let the record note that some might describe Oyeyemi’s work as magical realism. Oyeyemi once said she thinks only Gabriel Garcia Marquez writes magical realism and that her own work is just ‘stories’ (source).
- The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett (adult fantasy/mystery)
- So I only realized I actually have this on my TBR when I started browsing my Goodreads to-read shelf to complete today’s list 😂 After seeing it on so many blogger’s ‘best of’ lists at the end of the year, I was debating whether to add it to my TBR. The premise doesn’t super appeal to me but the hype may yet get me to pick it up…
- The Woods All Black by Lee Mandelo (adult horror)
- Pretty sure this was my most anticipated 2024 debut on my 2023 end of year survey… 🫣
- Sunny Parker is Here to Stay by Margaret Finnegan (middle grade contemporary)
- Canadian middle grade about housing activism!
- Wînipêk: Visions of Canada from an Indigenous Centre by Niigaan Sinclair (adult non-fiction)
- Local author + local topic = in the hold queue for months (and I even put it on hold before it won a Governor General!)
- It Happened to Anna by Tehlor Kay Mejia (middle grade horror)
- This author has had buzz in the book blogging world for years. She has previously written Paola Santiago for Rick Riordan Presents, but this middle grade novel is the one that caught my interst.
- The Maid and the Crocodile by Jordan Ifueko (young adult fantasy)
- This book came onto my radar after it had already been published. I loved the author’s Raybearer duology. This is set in the same world.
- Long Live Evil by Sarah Rees Brennan (adult fantasy)
- Looks like another fun fantasy (this time for adults) by the author of In Other Lands
- The Scholar and the Last Faerie Door by H.G. Parry (adult historical fantasy)
- Not much commentary for this one. Just another fantasy that’s been well-received in the blogosphere!
- Bye Forever, I Guess by Jodi Meadows (middle grade contemporary)
- I’m a little wary of this author given her YA history but I like the MMORPG slant.
Which 2024 releases are you still keen to pick up?

I was super excited to get my hands on Tainted Cup as well but then I never got around to reading it. I’ve heard incredible things about it though so I hope you enjoy it and all the other books you’ve mentioned here whenever you get around to reading them!
I heard such good things about The Scholar and the Last Faerie Door and would have liked to read it too. Good luck getting to some of these this year!
Winipek sounds like a great read.
The Woods All Black has a cool cover.
