November’s Result
L.M. Boston’s The Children of Green Knowe had been on my TBR for ‘only’ three years. I know I had signed it out from the library a couple times before but never got around to it. Thanks to your votes for making me read it at last!
Unfortunately, this wasn’t a good story for me. I don’t think I am cut out for this particular kind of British children’s literature. I don’t really understand it? (I had the same feeling about The Owl Service.) I feel like I don’t quite know what’s going on or what the characters are talking about, even though it seems obvious to them. But The Children of Green Knowe was a pleasant enough read, I suppose…I love how joyfully childlike Tolly is. I feel it’s rare to read about a character like him in today’s middle grade.
January’s Selection
This month’s picks come from my to-read-intriguing shelf. I sorted by number of ratings and chose from the highest. I feel like I haven’t read many books from that shelf this year, so I’d like to kick off 2019 with one.
- Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel (magical realism – 300,205 ratings)
- Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel (dystopian – 236,636 ratings)
- Dark Matter by Blake Crouch (thriller – 151,036 ratings)
- The Turn of the Screw by Henry James (Gothic horror – 77,074 ratings)
Which book should I read in January? Vote on the poll above or by leaving a comment below. (I can’t tell who voted on Twitter, so if you’re really keen you can vote in the comments AND on Twitter 😜)
