A casual mini event hosted by the Wyrd & Wonder folks (Lisa @ Dear Geek Place, Jorie @ Jorie Loves a Story, and Imyril @ One More), Spooktastic Reads celebrates “dark fantasy, Gothic horror and autumnal scares”. I don’t have much planned yet in the way of posts, though you’ll probably get a review or two of the books listed below. I might do a Twitter thread with the daily prompts. My main plan for this event is to indulge in said spooktastic reads. Here’s my 2020 spooky season reading list:

Reading List

  • Hide and Seeker by Daka Harmon (MG)
  • The Forgotten Girl by India Hill (MG)
  • The Girl and the Ghost by Hanna Alkaf (MG)
  • Bone Jack by Sara Crowe (MG)
  • Scritch Scratch by Lindsay Currie (MG)
  • White Fox by Sarah Faring (MG)
  • The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson (8th in line… might end up being a dark winter read) (adult)
  • Empire of Wild by Cherie Dimaline (currently reading) (adult)
  • Small Spaces by Katherine Arden (read 11 Oct., review scheduled for 23 Oct.) (MG)
  • Fever Dream by Samantha Schweblin (read 8 Oct.) (adult)

Do you enjoy spooky reads? What’s your go to fall read?

  1. Wow, you have a lot planned😁 I will probably be reviewing some spooky books too but I’ve decided not to officially participate since I’m going to focus on SciFiMonth in November.

  2. Currently wrestling my second blog post, but my plans for Spooktastic Reads are changing daily at the moment 😂 All I know for sure is that I’ve got one review that I wrote months ago scheduled and ready to go (thankfully!) and hopefully I can manage a couple more in between battling my way through Zone One…

  3. Hallo, Hallo Jenna,

I have to admit, you’ve stacked your TBR for this #SpooktasticReads with a lot of intense selections! I had to go over them a bit slower to see if I could spy out a few I could feel comfortable seeking out for myself as I was chatting about this on our tag and feeds this morning about how some stories just push me too far afield of my reading sensibilities to where I cannot go down those rabbit holes if it leads into dark, gruesome and gore within traditional Horror, Suspense or Thrillers.

Still though – a very well thought out post and I love having you a part of our lovely spookified event as it is nice to see whose enjoying our readathon in October and our big event in May. Always a delight to have bloggers joining us and sharing their spooky reads with our community – thanks for taking part this year. We appreciate you.

Of the whole list I think maybe “The Girl and the Ghost” might work well for me? I love spookified reads myself but on the lighter side of the ledger when it comes to psychological suspense and of course I do love a wicked good Cosy Horror story! Which is a term I coined years ago to reflect a throwback to vintage Horror films which were mostly off-camera and were more Hitchtockian in how they were reflecting the dramatic suspenseful bits.

I’m queuing up quite a lovely delight of stories this year – I definitely want to get through my Wonky Inn and Ruritarian Rogues audiobooks – whilst I have some ghosts thrown into the mix and some Mysteries, Suspense, Thrillers and some odd/end selections too! I’m just taking it easy this year and moving from story to story to see what sticks and what grips me the most. I wanted to approach this as my second bookish holiday to reclaim my reading life as I’ve had too many migraines to shift through in September. (ugh!)

Whom do you love to read in Autumn as Halloween approaches? Which story is grabbing you right now?

  4. I’m too easily spooked to read a lot of horror, so my one Spooktastic read is probably going to be Ring Shout by P. Djeli Clarke because I’ve seen it get a huge ammount of praise, and love the author’s Cairo stories.
I’m really enjoying being spooked vicariously through other people’s blog posts though!
