Wrap Up

My eighth Read-a-thon has come to an end. I read for 6 hours and 12 minutes. I achieved my goal of completing two middle grade books, plus a little extra. The next Read-a-thon will take place on April 24. It’s hard to imagine that far into the future right now, but I hope to participate.

  • Read 59% to finish Hide and Seeker
  • Read 275 pages to start and finish The Girl and the Ghost
  • Read 41% to start Hatch
  • Read 34 pages of The Lord of the Rings (reread in progress through October to December)
  • Read 56 pages of Middle-Earth: From Script to Screen

Hour 12 – Mid Event Survey

  • What are you reading right now?
    • The Girl and the Ghost by Hanna Alkaf
  • How many books have you read so far?
    • Completed Hide and Seeker (had previously read 25%)
    • 75% through The Girl and the ghost
    • Read bits of three others (Middle-earth from Script to Screen, The Fellowship of the Ring, and Hatch)
  • What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?
    • I am really enjoying The Girl and the Ghost and look forward to finishing it after I go for a walk!
  • Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
    • Nothing serious, I’ve just been taking little breaks at my leisure
  • What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?
    • I was pleasantly surprised by the engagement I had with the Twitter party I hosted 🙂

Hour 3 – Opening Survey

Good morning! I spent 45 minutes reading The Lord of the Rings when I woke up. Now i’m ready to fill in the opening survey.

  • What fine part of the world are you reading from today?
    • Winnipeg, Canada
  • Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?
    • Hard call, but maybe Hatch because I know it’s a sequel to a book I really enjoyed
  • Which snack are you most looking forward to?
    • Cheerios…not the most exciting but I haven’t munched on Cheerios while reading for a long time!
  • Tell us a little something about yourself!
    • I started studying Japanese again this year so I can communicate more next time I visit Japan.
  • If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to?
    • I participated pretty casually in the April 2020 Read-a-thon. This time I’m a little more involved. I’ll be hosting a Twitter party in a few hours and a mini-challenge later in the day.

Preparation

Today’s the day! Read-a-thon is here. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, check out my earlier post. I’ll be updating this post throughout the event, but I’ll be most active on Twitter. (Keep an eye out for the Twitter party I’m hosting during hour 8!). Read-a-thon starts at 7:00AM my time. Almost nothing gets me up before 8:00AM, so I’ve scheduled this post in advance. I’ll update it with the opening survey when I wake up.

TBR

Here are the books I’ll be choosing from today. If I finish two middle grade books or their equivalent, I’ll call that a success. The list is long because I like options.

  • Hide and Seeker by Daka Harmon (library ebook)
  • Hatch by Kenneth Oppel (library ebook)
    • A sequel to a MG book I read earlier this year. Could be called environmental/scifi horror? But not technically on my spooky season TBR.
  • Scritch Scratch by Lindsay Currie (library ebook)
    • From my spooky season TBR
  • The Girl and the Ghost by Hanna Alkaf (own hardcover)
    • From my spooky season TBR
  • Dead Voices by Katherine Arden (library hardcover)
    • Technically not on my spooky season TBR, but I have a copy and have heard it’s even better than the first book, so I might pick it up…
  • White Fox by Sara Faring (library ebook)
    • From my spooky season TBR
  • The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien (own softcover)
    • Currently undertaking my annual reread of this book (I’ve just passed through Lothlórien.) . It will give me a break from spooky fictions/ebooks.
  • Middle-Earth from Script to Screen by Daniel Falconer (own hardcover)
    • This hefty book lives at my parents’ house, where I’m currently staying. It will also function as a ‘break giver’.

What are you reading this weekend?
