Today’s Top Ten Tuesday theme is Books I Hope Santa Brings/Bookish Wishes. I’m adapting that to 2023 Releases Still on My TBR. I have not read many 2023 releases! That being said, I would like to note I have achieved the minor sucess of having read six of the ten titles I highlighted back in my January post “Most Anticipated Books Releasing Jan – Jun 2023“. But there remain so many 2023 releases on my TBR that I’ve decided to publish two separate posts today. This one focuses on middle grade, while the other post includes everything else.

  1. Just a Pinch of Magic by Alechia Dow (family bakery, magic, single dads)
  2. The Otherwoods by Justine Purcella Winans (spirit world, reluctant hero, nonbinary protagonist)
  3. The Cursed Moon by Angela Cervantes (ghost story, thriller, incarcerated mother)
  4. Abeni’s Song by P. Dejli Clark (West African fantasy adventure)
  5. Skating on Mars by Caroline Huntoon (skating competition, grief, nonbinary protagonist)
  6. Jude Saves the World by Ronnie Riley (school, Diversity Club, nonbinary protagonist)
  7. A Spoonful of Time by Flora Ahn (time travel, family recipes, family secrets)
  8. Izzy at the End of the World by K.A. Reynolds (apocalyptic, scifi, autistic protagonist)
  9. The Carrefour Curse by Dianne K. Salerni (dilapidated mansion, dark magic, family feuding)
  10. Greenwild: The World Behind the Door by Pari Thomson (missing mother, portal fantasy, plant magic)

What 2023 MG title are you still anticipating? Which of these should I prioritize in 2024?

  1. Ms. Yingling

I do have a few titles I haven’t gotten copies of, including Young Alfred: Pain in the Butler, Huda F Cares?, and (sadly) No Brainer (Diary of a Wimpy Kid Book 18). There are always a few titles (in series mostly) that I have to buy for the school before I get a chance to read them. Yours look much more fun!

  2. I’m trying to make sure I read more MG and younger-YA Sci-Fi and Fantasy titles in 2024 for review. Greenwild and Izzy at the End of the World both look really good and up my alley. Adding them to my TBR pile!!

The covers on these books are amazing, it makes me want to check them out. I hope you enjoy them when you do get around to reading them.

  4. Ooh, I loved Greenwild! It gave me sort of Nevermoor vibes, with the immersive and creative world. And Abeni’s Song is very good, as well! But the cover for The Cursed Moon might be a bit too scary for me!

    • That is encouraging to hear re Greenwild! The cover and title made me feel iffy but to hear it comp’d to Nevermoor… as for the cover of The Cursed Moon, I love that they went with full on scary, haha. I’ve only read one book by the author, some years ago, so I’m keen to see how she does with scary.

      • Yeah, I don’t know. The reviews made it sound like Greenwild is some sort of eco-message? I found it more to be an immersive world based on green/plant magic. Some of the characterization could use work, but, overall I think it’s the sort of book people are always looking for as the “new Harry Potter” in terms of creating a secondary world with a magical school kids want to attend.

I might have to check out The Cursed Moon. I’m not big on scary, but MG scary is usually about the most I can handle, lol.
